Library Challenge Week 1-ABC easier than 123

1a.

 World Book Kids

The cheetah is a large wild cat. Cheetahs live mostly on grasslands in Africa. Over short distances, they are the fastest land animals in the world. Cheetahs can run 50 to 70 miles (80 to 110 kilometers) per hour.
People also have destroyed much of the grasslands where cheetahs live.

World Book Student

Cheetah is a large cat chiefly found on the grassy plains of eastern and southern Africa. It is the fastest land mammal over short distances. Cheetahs can run at a top speed of 50 to 70 miles (80 to 110 kilometers) per hour. But they can maintain this speed for only a few hundred yards or meters.

2a.  The picture used at the top of the article was the same in both databases.  In WBS, there was much more description about all aspects of the cheetah; body, habitat and survival.  WBK is definitely for the younger researcher.  The information is very basic and the article was quite short and to the point.

3a.  When first I searched "Germany", Germany was listed at the top but under were specific subjects all relating to Germany.  For example Adolf Hitler, Berlin, Bonn, Sebastian Vettel, etc.  So if a patron/student did not know that there were those cities in Germany or the famous people in Germany, they would see those items right away and might want to research further in that direction rather than the general "Germany" section.
After clicking on "Germany", the information was broken down into categories but there were also links to videos, pictures of the flag, people, country and famous architecture.  Very thorough information for research.

4a.  I can see students using all of the tabs available in the "Reference Tools" section.  There was a young man in last night who needed to cite his information.  He could have also used the section "How to Research".  I really like that they can set up a username/password to save their research information.  This is a great resource for all students.

1b. To a dog, its owner's house and yard is its territory.

World Book Online Info Finder

2b.  Dogs instinctively regard their owner's house, yard, and the surrounding area as their own territory and will defend it against intruders.

WBKO is definitely for younger children with its basic information and pictures.  WBOIF is for an older child with it's specific information, for instance, the list of specific breeds of dogs and their traits.  The amount of different information is also much greater.

3b.  There's so much information!  I personally like the links along the left side of the page.  A patron/student can search through maps, books, pictures, videos, etc.

1c.  I recently had a discussion with the HS Spanish teacher.  She would like to have a field trip to the Library.  We were brainstorming different activities we could have for the kids, for example, a scavenger hunt.  I don't know a lot of Spanish but using these databases, I could help her by having items labeled before she brought the kids.  She wouldn't have to do all the work!

2c.  This feature would be helpful to Spanish students, or Spanish speaking patrons, or patrons wishing to learn the Spanish language.
